'Music is not illusion, but revelation' Tchaikovsky
Is there still something to reveal about Tchaikovsky? Doesn’t his music already receive enough performances and loving attention all over the world?
This two week festival juxtaposes Tchaikovsky’s own music with those of his predecessors and successors, exploring the inter-relationships with composers who influenced him and those for whom Tchaikovsky was in turn an inspiration.
The concerts are an opportunity to hear some of Tchaikovsky’s works that are either unjustly neglected, or simply not played often enough, as well as some of his best-known and highly familiar ballet and orchestral music.
Explore the links between the composers, listen to excerpts from the music and discover great music live at Southbank Centre.
From
Vladimir Jurowski, Festival Artistic Director:
'This exploration is particularly exciting as I am joined
by my two favourite London orchestras, the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, a truly
wonderful collection of soloists and two revered senior colleagues of mine and true specialists of Tchaikovsky’s style
- conductors Gennadi Rozhdestvensky and Neeme Järvi.'
