Spring/summer highlights include three concerts with Sir Charles Mackerras combining Strauss tone poems with significant third symphonies and Christoph von Dohnanyi's final performances as the Orchestra's Principal Conductor before he takes up the position of Honorary Conductor for Life in September 2008. The Orchestra marks the 50th Anniversary of Vaughan Williams' death, with the opening of Vaughan Williams: The Pioneering Pilgrim that includes a complete symphony cycle under Richard Hickox. The sensational young conductor Gustavo Dudamel, whose relationship with the Orchestra has gone from strength to strength since his debut in 2005 returns in June and Lorin Maazel's eagerly awaited Brahms Retrospective closes the season. Distinguished soloists performing with the Orchestra include Emanuel Ax, Frank Peter Zimmermann, Till Fellner, Boris Berezovsky, Lars Vogt and Andreas Haefliger.
